Fire, Earth, Air, Water: The Four Elements of the Zodiac

By Mind to Reality · October 21, 2026 · 3 min read

The twelve signs fall into four groups of three, one for each element. Most people know which element their sign is. Fewer know what the element is actually made of, and that is the part that explains why some signs understand each other without trying.

FireAries, Leo, Sagittariushot and dry
EarthTaurus, Virgo, Capricorncold and dry
AirGemini, Libra, Aquariushot and moist
WaterCancer, Scorpio, Piscescold and moist

The two qualities underneath

In the old tradition every element is a pair of qualities. Hot means fast, eager, moving outward. Cold means slow, careful, holding back. Dry means keeping things separate and clear. Moist means letting things run into each other, mixing, joining.

  • Fire is hot and dry: quick to move, and clear about where it stands.
  • Earth is cold and dry: slow to move, and clear about where it stands.
  • Air is hot and moist: quick to move, and quick to connect things.
  • Water is cold and moist: slow to move, and quick to feel everything at once.

What that means between two people

Two signs of the same element are made of the same stuff and go at a thing the same way. Two signs that share one quality meet on that one and part on the other. Fire and air are both hot, so they agree on speed. Earth and water are both cold, so they agree on caution.

Then there are the pairs that share nothing at all: fire and water, earth and air. Hot against cold, dry against moist. Nothing underneath holds them together, so anything they build is built on purpose. That is not a verdict that they cannot work. It is a description of how much work it is.

In Bituin, when you add someone from your life, the app works out what is true between your sign and theirs, starting from exactly this. Their sign then talks to you about them from there.
