Sun, Moon and Rising: The Three Signs Inside You
Ask a Filipino their sign and they will tell you their Sun sign, the one decided by their birthday. But a birth chart holds more than one sign. The three people talk about most are the Sun, the Moon and the rising sign.
The Sun: the one everybody knows
The Sun spends about a month in each sign, so everyone born in the same few weeks shares it. It is the broad shape of a person: what they are built around. When someone reads a description of their sign and says "ako talaga 'to", this is the sign they are reading about.
The Moon: the one that moves fast
The Moon crosses a whole sign in about two and a half days. That is why two people born the same month can have completely different Moons. In the tradition the Moon is the inner side: how a person reacts, what comforts them, what they are like at home when nobody is performing.
Because it moves so fast, the Moon sometimes changes sign on the very day you were born. Without a birth time there is no way to know which side of the change you landed on. Bituin does not guess when that happens. It leaves your Moon out of the reckoning until a birth time settles it.
The rising sign: the one that needs the minute
The rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. Because the whole sky turns once a day, the rising sign changes roughly every two hours. Two people born on the same day in the same city can have different rising signs if they were born a few hours apart.
That is why it needs two things: the time you were born, and where. The horizon in Davao is not the horizon in Baguio. If you give Bituin both, it calculates a real rising sign from them. If you give only one, it shows you none, because a rising sign worked out from half the information is quietly wrong, and that is worse than not having one.
Why the rising sign changes your whole chart
The rising sign is where the twelve houses of a chart start counting from. The houses are the areas of life: money, home, love, work and the rest. With a rising sign, each planet lands in the house the tradition intended. Without one, the houses are counted from your Sun sign instead, which is the standard fallback and still useful, just less personal.
How to find yours
Your birth time may be written on your birth certificate. If it is not, ask a parent or an older relative. If nobody is sure of the hour, leave it out: a guessed time gives you a rising sign that looks real and is not. Once you have it, sign up on Bituin with your full birth date, tick "I know the time I was born", and add the time and the city. The app does the rest.
